Today in my health class, a woman came in to speak about her life. When she was 16 she had several psychological problems. She had just been released from a center for depression when she met a boy. They hit it off and soon she found herself pregnant. Today, after several struggles with school, work, fighting and the birth of her daughter, she comes to schools to speak to kids about what she went through. We always think about the consequences of becoming a teen parent. The cost, the waiting, the self loathing, the baby’s future. But what we rarely think about is the ridicule. As teenagers, we are the meanest group of people on the planet. We should be helping each other instead of putting each other down. We all judge people. Whether its because of their hair, or their clothes, or their grades or whatever. There are people who think they are better than others and the truth is, we are all the same. The difference is their mind. You never know what someone is thinking. You never know what goes on at home or at work or what they are feeling. So the next time you think “Oh my god, he’s such a dousche!” or “OMG she’s pregnant! SLUT!” consider what that person might be going through. Consider if they did that to you, how you would feel. I know this is cheesey but it’s entirely true. I admit I’m not exempt from this, I judge people too. But I’m promising to stop and think the next time I start to judge someone. And who knows, the next person you talk to instead of judging, could turn out to be your best friend. BE KIND. Show the world that they are wrong about us. Show them that we aren’t all about drama and hating each other. BE KIND.
